Digital Reading Partnerships
This grant provides resources to engage Blue Ridge and Parkade students in personalized, high quality reading materials at anytime and from any location. Through the use of the Kindle Fires, students and their families will have access to myON Reader, Study Island and TumbleBook Library at both school and at home. The Kindle Fires will provide access to all three instructional resources allowing students and parents to become partners in improving reading proficiency.
Creating Modern School Library Programs in Columbia Public Schools
This grant provides funds to CPS intermediate libraries to purchase needed materials to bring the libraries up to date for the 2013-14 transition. Currently, middle school libraries are aligned with the 6th and 7th grade curriculum and junior high libraries are aligned for the 8th and 9th grade curriculum. All six libraries need to be aligned for 6th – 8th grade curriculum starting with the 2013-14 school year. These libraries will need both content area resources and books for reading pleasure in order to encourage academic achievement and enhance learning opportunities for all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students in CPS.
To Infinity and Beyond
This grant will provide our newly refurbished CPS Planetarium with additional full dome media show rights that will expand the use by additional K-5 classrooms as well as expand the planetarium use to include secondary science classrooms. We currently do not provide service to secondary science classes as we do not have the media shows at their grade level. By expanding the use of the planetarium, we will excite and engage more students to science, which research shows is a critical factor in their decision on whether or not to pursue a career in science or health.

What All Fourth Graders Should Know about this famous Columbia, Missourian: Two years ago, four elementary schools (Lee, Grant, Blue Ridge, and Ridgeway) piloted a program* where the art and music teachers from each school worked on curriculum to be included in the fine arts objectives for each of these content areas. Their intent was to teach about Blind Boone (a famous Columbia native) in music and art and then work with the 4th grade teachers to integrate the material into the core for social studies. It was a huge success! These measurable objectives have since been Board approved to be included in the curriculum for fourth grade art and music. Many lesson activities and ideas have been added to Angel that came out of this pilot project. Each school listed above received seven books and two CD recordings to use for lesson preparation and delivery of information. Since the pilot project was so successful, we would like to provide the same resources for the remaining fifteen elementary schools in the district so that all fourth graders will know about this famous Columbia native.
